Frequently Asked Questions
Going to X Games
- I'm going to X Games 17. What's the best way to get there?
-
There are many good ways to get to X Games 17. It all depends on where you’re coming from. Since all the X Games events are being held in one general area this year, you can use the same routes that you would normally use if you were going to the STAPLES Center, Nokia Theatre, or L.A. LIVE. The only major closure you might have to contend with is Figueroa St, between Olympic Bl and Pico Bl.
Once you get to the area, use the detour routes shown in the map directly below to navigate around the closures so you can get to the parking lots closest to X Games 17.
View Overview Map - I'm going to X Games 17 in a larger map- If you’re northbound on the 110, take exit 21 for the I-10 toward Santa Monica Fwy West (left lane), follow signs for Pico Bl, and merge onto L.A. Live Wy. Use the detour routes shown above to navigate around the closures.
- If you’re northbound on the 110 HOV lane and the 110 mainline is quite congested, exit Adams Bl, turn left at Adams, turn right onto Figueroa St, and proceed north to Venice Bl. Use the detour routes shown above to navigate around the closures.
- If you’re southbound on the 110, exit 9th St, continue onto 9th St/James M Wood, and turn right onto Flower St. Use the detour routes shown above to navigate around the closures. However, if you plan on parking in Lot E, you can also exit 8th St, turn left at Union Av, and turn left onto Olympic Bl; destination will be on your right hand side.
- If you’re westbound on the 10, take exit 13 for 110 North toward Downtown, follow signs for Pico Bl/Convention Center, and merge onto L.A. Live Wy. Use the detour routes shown above to navigate around the closures.
- If you’re eastbound on the 10, take the transition road to the 110 North (Pasadena), stay in the right lanes and don’t merge onto the mainline 110, exit 9th St, and turn right onto Flower St. Use the detour routes shown above to navigate around the closures.
If the Metro Blue, Gold or Red Lines are viable options for you, then be sure you take advantage of the Metro Rail's Flower/Pico stop. It's just right across the street from all the action at Lot 7.
- Where can I park?
-
Thankfully, there are more than enough parking lots in the area for you to park your vehicle. Unfortunately, however, none of them are free. Although there are no "X Games specific" parking lots, you can park in most of the usual parking lots that you would use when visiting the STAPLES Center or L.A. LIVE. The closest parking lots adjacent to all the action are Lot E, Lot W, Lot 5, and West Hall. Since the Rally Car and Big Air events will be held across the street from STAPLES Center, Lots 6 through 8 will not be available for parking. More parking lot information can be found on our map: www.commuterama.com/xgames/map.
- I plan on biking to X Games 17. Where can I park my bike?
-
Bicycle parking is available at the following locations:
- In the P1 level of Lot E (East Garage) located on Olympic Bl and Francisco St. Ride down the ramp, racks are located to the left.
- Lot 8, on the northeast corner of Figueroa St and 11th St/Chick Hearn Ct
- How do I get inside X Games 17?
-
You can enter the X Games 17 venue at three different locations:
- Nokia Plaza - The main entrance for the X Games venue. If you're coming from the lots to the north or from Lot E, this is where you'll want to enter. Here you'll find the Awards Stage, Skate Check, Guest Services, and a medical station. It's also just a stone's throw away from X Fest.
- Chick Hearn Ct, between L.A. Live Wy and Georgia Av. Use this entrance if you're coming from parking lots from the west side of the venue, such as L.A. Convention Center West Hall parking garage. Enter from here and you'll find yourself right in the mix of X Fest.
- Bridge #5 from Lot 5 - If you're coming from the south or happen to park in Lot 5, you'll have to enter here since Gilbert Lindsay Plaza, between the Convention Center and STAPLES Center, will be entirely off limits due to the Rally Car Course.
You can enter the X Games 17 venue at the above areas without a ticket! X Fest is entirely free to the public. You won't, however, be able to watch any of the competition unless you have a ticket. So roam around X Fest as much as would like, but be sure to get yourself a ticket or two if you want to catch some of the action. Tickets are needed to get into the Event Deck, Nokia Theatre, STAPLES Center, and Lot 7.
- What are the dates, times and locations of all the different X Games 17 events?

Going to the Surrounding Area
- How far do the road closures extend? Will I be affected?
-
The road closures don't extend too far from the actual X Games venue because most of the streets in the area make for sufficient detour routes. Local officials don't have to worry about a massive amount of detour traffic winding their way through residential streets like they would in other areas. So since it's Downtown LA, the only thing you have to worry about are one way streets.
Will you be affected? Well that depends on your mode of transportation and where exactly you need to go. If you're traveling by rail, then you don't have anything to worry about. If you're traveling by bus and your bus passes through Figueroa between Pico and Olympic, then you will be affected. The same holds true if your bus travels westbound on Pico between Figueroa St and L.A. Live Wy. The lines affected include lines 30, 81, 442, 450x, 460, Silver Line 910, and LADOT's DASH F. According to Metro, northbound buses that normally run northbound on Figueroa will use Olive as a detour between Pico and Olympic. Southbound buses will use Pico to return to Figueroa instead of 11th St. Although, Metro didn't state where Line 30 (westbound Pico) will head once it hits Figueroa, we suspect that it will use Venice as a detour between Figueroa and L.A. Live Wy. For more information on taking the Metro, visit metro.net or follow them on Twitter @metrolosangeles.
If you're driving, you won't really be impacted unless you need to head north on Figueroa St. Those wishing to head south on Figueroa from Olympic Bl should use Flower St instead. If you're headed north, however, and you're not going to X Games, L.A. LIVE, or the L.A. Convention Center, then the first closure you'll run into will either be at Venice Bl or Pico Bl, depending on what prevailing conditions dictate. To avoid potential bottlenecks up ahead due to event traffic, use the detour routes shown below in our map so you can stay clear of the venue while traveling just a few blocks away from it. Westbound and eastbound Pico Bl should use Venice Bl or Olympic Bl.
View Overview Map - I'm going to the surrounding area in a larger map - Will the road closures be open when the events are done for the day?
-
No, the closures will remain in effect throughout the entire weekend.
- Can I still get to L.A. LIVE or the L.A. Convention Center with all the X Games 17 events going on?
-
Yes you can! You just won't be able to park in Lots 6, 7 and 8, and you also won't be able to enter from Gilbert Lindsay Plaza. Use Flower St, Venice Bl, L.A. Live Wy, and Olympic Bl get around the closures while staying as close to your destination's parking lots as possible. Due to their proximity to the X Games 17 venue, the same directions for thos going to X Games 17 apply to those visiting L.A. LIVE or the Los Angeles Convention Center.
- How do I get to the Ritz-Carlton Los Angeles or JW Marriott Hotels at L.A. LIVE?
-
Both hotels can be accessed from Olympic Bl. Just use the same detour routes as if you're goig to X Games 17 if you need to get to these hotels.
Just Trying to Get Around
- I'm just trying to get to the other side of Downtown LA. How do I get around X Games 17?
-
Generally, if the freeways are moving quite well, even at 40 mph, you should stay on the freeways as long as possible. The speed limit on LA’s surface streets is usually 35 mph, and 25 mph in a central business district. However, if you must exit prematurely for whatever reason, and you just happen to be in Downtown LA, then you should be aware of the road closures associated with the X Games so you can avoid them well in advance.
There aren’t too many closures for the X Games and the motorists that would be impacted the most would be those traveling northbound on Figueroa. So if you’re one of the many drivers who like to exit at Adams Bl from the 110 N HOV lane, you should continue westbound on Adams Bl and NOT turn right at Figueroa St. Instead continue along Adams Bl until you reach Hoover St. At Hoover, turn right and proceed north to Alvarado St (see the map below). Another viable option would be to turn right at Adams and head east towards Main St. At Main St, you will want to turn left and head north. Both of these detour routes take you around the closed off area and away from all the event traffic.
View Overview - I'm just trying to get around in a larger mapHowever, if you’re not in a hurry and you want to get closer to the venue to catch a glimpse of some of the action at the X Games, you’re more than welcome to do so. Just keep in mind that you’ll need some extra patience as you encounter detours, slower moving motorists, and a lot more pedestrians in the area. Remember to watch the road.
Motorists heading south on Flower St don’t really need a detour. Flower St will remain open. Thru traffic should try utilizing the left lanes of Flower St, to give way to and avoid the slower moving traffic in the right lanes who are just trying to find a parking lot.
